ICS File Not Importing? Here's How to Fix It
Common .ics import issues and solutions for Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, and Outlook — plus a troubleshooting checklist.
Common .ics import errors
If your .ics file is not importing, the issue is usually one of these:
- File is corrupted or incomplete — The file may have been cut off during download, or the formatting is broken. Try re-downloading it.
- Wrong file extension — The file must end in
.ics. Some systems may rename it to.txton download. - Encoding issues — The file should be UTF-8 encoded. Files saved with non-standard encodings may fail to parse.
- Missing required fields — A valid .ics file needs BEGIN:VCALENDAR, VERSION, at least one VEVENT with DTSTART, and END:VCALENDAR.
Fix for Google Calendar
Google Calendar import issues and solutions:
- Cannot find the import option? The import feature is only available on the web at calendar.google.com. Go to Settings > Import & Export. It is not available in the mobile app.
- Import button is greyed out? Make sure you selected a file first. Only
.icsand.csvfiles are accepted. - Events imported but not visible? Check that you are looking at the correct date range. Also verify the target calendar is checked in the left sidebar.
- Wrong times? Check Settings > Time zone. Google Calendar converts UTC times to your configured timezone.

Fix for Apple Calendar
Apple Calendar (iCal) import issues and solutions:
- Double-click does not work? Right-click the .ics file, select Open With, and choose Calendar. If the file opens in a text editor instead, your file associations may need updating.
- Events go to the wrong calendar? When Apple Calendar prompts you to import, select the correct target calendar from the dropdown before confirming.
- File opens but no events appear? Use the ICS Viewer to inspect the file and check if it contains valid events.
- On iPhone/iPad: Tap the .ics file (from email, Files, or Safari downloads) and it should offer to add the events to Calendar. If it does not, try opening the file from the Files app.
Fix for Outlook
Microsoft Outlook import issues and solutions:
- Outlook desktop: Go to File > Open & Export > Import/Export > Import an iCalendar (.ics) file. Select your file and choose to open it as a new calendar or import directly.
- Outlook web (outlook.com): Go to Calendar > Add calendar > Upload from file. Select your .ics file.
- Events show wrong timezone? Outlook may interpret times differently if the .ics file does not include timezone information. Try re-creating the file with Text2ICS, which includes proper timezone data.
- "File is not valid" error? Outlook is strict about .ics formatting. A file that works in Google Calendar may fail in Outlook if it has minor formatting issues. Re-creating with Text2ICS ensures compatibility.
Troubleshooting checklist
Run through this checklist to diagnose your import issue:
- Does the file end in
.ics? (not .txt, .ical, or other) - Can you open the file in a text editor and see
BEGIN:VCALENDARat the top? - Does the file contain at least one
BEGIN:VEVENTblock? - Does each event have a
DTSTARTfield? - Is the file size greater than 0 bytes?
- Try uploading the file to the ICS Viewer — if it loads correctly there, the file is valid
Still not working? Re-create with Text2ICS
If your .ics file will not import no matter what you try, the simplest fix is to re-create it. Paste your original event text into Text2ICS and download a fresh .ics file. Text2ICS generates files that are tested for compatibility with Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, and Outlook.
Preguntas Frecuentes
Why won't my .ics file import into Google Calendar?
Common causes: the file may be corrupted, have the wrong encoding, or contain formatting errors. Try re-downloading or re-creating the file with Text2ICS. Make sure you are importing from the web version of Google Calendar, not the mobile app.
Why are my events showing the wrong time after import?
This is usually a timezone issue. Check that your calendar app timezone matches your local timezone. If the .ics file uses UTC times (ending in Z), the events should be automatically converted to your local time.
Can I import .ics files on my phone?
On iOS, tap the .ics file to open it in Apple Calendar. On Android, tap the file to open it in Google Calendar. If direct opening does not work, email the file to yourself and open the attachment.
My .ics file works in one app but not another. Why?
Different calendar apps have varying levels of strictness in .ics parsing. A file that works in Apple Calendar may fail in Outlook if it has minor formatting issues. Re-creating with Text2ICS ensures broad compatibility.
How do I check if my .ics file is valid?
Upload it to the Text2ICS ICS Viewer — if the events load and display correctly, the file is valid. You can also open it in a text editor to check that it starts with BEGIN:VCALENDAR and contains VEVENT blocks.
