How to Import an ICS File into Google Calendar
Why Import ICS Files into Google Calendar?
ICS (iCalendar) files are the universal standard for sharing calendar events. Whether you received a meeting invitation, downloaded a conference schedule, or generated events with Text2ICS, importing them into Google Calendar is straightforward once you know where to look.
Method 1: Import via Google Calendar on Desktop
This is the most reliable way to import .ics files into Google Calendar.
- Open Google Calendar in your browser.
- Click the gear icon in the top-right corner and select Settings.
- In the left sidebar, click Import & export.
- Click Select file from your computer and choose your .ics file.
- Select which calendar you want to add the events to.
- Click Import. You'll see a confirmation of how many events were added.
Method 2: Import on Android
On Android devices, you can often tap a downloaded .ics file and it will open directly in Google Calendar. If that doesn't work:
- Download the .ics file to your device.
- Open the file using your file manager.
- Select Google Calendar when prompted to choose an app.
- Review the event details and tap Save.
Method 3: Import via Gmail
If someone emails you an .ics file, Gmail can detect it automatically:
- Open the email containing the .ics attachment.
- You may see an Add to Calendar prompt at the top of the email.
- Alternatively, download the attachment and use Method 1.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
- Events don't appear: Check that you're looking at the correct calendar. Use the sidebar to toggle calendars on and off.
- Wrong timezone: Google Calendar converts times to your local timezone. If events appear at the wrong time, verify the timezone in the .ics file.
- Duplicate events: Google Calendar does not check for duplicates during import. If you import the same file twice, you'll get duplicate events.
- Large files: Google Calendar can import files with up to 100 events at a time.
